Chocolate for a Nine Year Old Cook
Fudgy Buttons
With ten or eleven
people living in this house, depending on if my college daughter is home,
there is always somebody in the kitchen. The boys cook as much as the
girls but not the same way. The boys want to fix things that are fast
and with the minimum amount of creativity. And usually that means treats.
They each have
their favorite sweet thing to make. It might not be their favorite
food...but if they have to do the work, they always choose from a small number
of recipes.
My youngest boy
is nine. His favorite, "I'm the cook and in charge" recipe is Fudgy
Buttons. It only takes a minute to whip up and everybody loves it.
Cleanup is just as quick.
When Ryan first
started making these he went through an entire jar of peanut butter.
He fixed a double batch every day. Friends would come over and he would
want to cook with them. Family Night Treat was Ryan's buttons.
Sunday desert was Ryan's buttons. Chocolate Cravings? "Hey Ryan!?!"
It has been two months since our last batch but with Christmas around the
corner it is time to call in our expert once again.
I found this
recipe from my favorite cooking magazine, Taste of Home's Quick Cooking.
FUDGY BUTTONS
4 Tablespoons
butter (no substitute)
1 Tablespoon Baking
Cocoa
1 cup confectioners'
sugar
1 teaspoon milk
4 Tablespoons creamy
peanut butter
In a small sauce
pan, melt the butter, remove from the heat. Add cocoa and mix well.
Stir in sugar. Add milk and stir until smooth. Add peanut butter
and mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper; flatten tops.
Refrigerate until serving. About 3 dozen.

References and Resource Recommendations
Managing a kitchen in
a large family can be a pretty exhausting task. It certainly isn't something
that can take care of itself! With that in mind I am always looking
for ways to make the kitchen experience easier, more enjoyable, or just plain
manageable. Mega cooking, recipes, teaching children how to cook, organizing
the kitchen are just some of the topics addressed in my Kitchen Chaos series.
This index contains the entire series, not just the recipes.
Kitchen Chaos Individual Recipe Index
I have posted more than
one recipe on each of my cooking pages. For your convenience I have
submitted this individual index so you can find which recipe is on which page.
I hope you enjoy them. Remember that my recipes are altered to be for
a family of twelve. If your family is smaller, many of the recipes
can be prepared as is and then divided and frozen for additional meals during
stressful times. This index is just for listing the recipes and does
not include the other kitchen and cooking articles.
